About me

About me

Hello, I'm Matthew.

I am a psychotherapist with over 18 years of experience working in a range of NHS mental health and psychological wellbeing settings, GP clinics, and private psychotherapy organisations.

I am trained to in three main modalities: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Person-centred Counselling and Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy. In also make use of approaches such as Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion-focused Therapy (CFT) and a range of mindfulness approaches.

Although I specialise in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), including complex trauma (childhood trauma), I treat a range of anxiety disorders such as OCT, and low self-esteem, depression, loss, bereavement, stress, addictions, alcohol dependence, relationship issues, etc.

I am passionate about helping people unlock their potential and recover form self-limiting beliefs and distressing experiences. My style is compassionate and collaborative. I draw on a range of psychotherapeutic modalities, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, person-centred counselling and Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy.

I believe everyone has the potential to move towards being an integrated, complete person. The first step is developing insight and understanding of the problem, whatever it is. From there, I will work then alongside you to develop a tailored approach that will harness your strengths and give you the best chance to gain mastery over your mind, and therefore you life.

The Benefits of Psychotherapy

Do you want to develop insight into and change patterns of thinking, feeling and reacting that maintain anxiety, depression, anger or stress? Do you struggle with trauma or addiction, or simply want to transform your relationship with loved ones? Or would you like to make freer choices, increase your self-understanding, unlock your full potential or learn to live in a more empowered, mindful way?

Sometimes unresolved past events - a difficult childhood, a traumatic experience - leave emotional wounds that reactivate under certain conditions. Even small traumas or what seems distressing events can leave us experiencing painful emotions that can cause problems in relationships and in come cases even impact our ability to function in day to day life.

I am trained in a range of therapies that are designed to resolve these issues, including:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT):

Aims to look at patterns of unhelpful thinking patterns and unhealthy responses that maintain a problem, to develop insight and freedom from these reactions and to live in a more responsive way to situations. New strategies and techniques are taught and practiced by the client to help them explore new and different ways of relating to their problem.

Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy:

Specifically developed to resolve Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), this approach involves identifying past traumas from a person's life in order to fully process these experiences leaving one free from the emotional distress linked to the memory. This therapy approach is perfect for anytime of traumatic/distressing life event, including physical, sexual or emotional abuse, road traffic accidents, medical trauma, and sudden unexpected loss to name a few.

Humanistic Counselling:

A warm, non-judgmental, open approach is offered by the therapist to help the client feel at ease and enable them to explore various themes of challenge in their life. The therapeutic relationship is seen as key to fostering insight and transformation in the clients' relationship to their problems. This therapy works particularly well for issues of role transformation, bereavement/grief/loss, depression and relationship difficulties.

Mindfulness, Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT):

Meditative techniques are offered to help one connect more deeply with the present moment and access a dimension of being which enables the client to witness and distance themselves from unhelpful thinking and emotional distress. Clients are trained in how to adopt an 'observer stance' to their distress, to develop a 'compassionate self', which enables them to view their suffering from a compassionate perspective. This approach is particularly useful in working with low self-esteem, thoughts of self-criticism, or for people who want to learn to develop a sense of inner calm and peace.

How I work

I know well the importance of establishing a therapeutic relationship that is based on trust, openness and acceptance. From this platform, I work together with you to develop a shared understanding of the difficulties. During the initial consultation, identify key goals for therapy and discussion what the best approach might be. The approach we select should best suit your needs and ensure you have the best chance to resolve and experience freedom from the issues that concern you.

The psychotherapeutic approaches I draw from are based on evidence-based (NICE) guidelines, which means the approach we select should be based on the best current guidelines for good practice. In addition, I recognise the pace of therapy should be comfortable, and I am sensitive to fact that many clients share material that is highly sensitive and personal.

It is important to discuss your areas of strength and resilience, as we can harness your potential in overcoming difficulties through the skills and abilities you already have. We then set out together to discover the most efficient pathway towards your full recovery.

Supervision

I offer supervision to other mental health practitioners, counselors, and psychotherapists. Please enquire to discuss availability and rates.

In my own practice, I am bound by the ethical guidelines of British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy (BABCP)

Where I work

I am based near Didsbury Village, Greater Manchester, where I have a private clinic. I also offer online therapy using Zoom, a secure video conferencing platform.

If you are interested in working with me, please contact me by telephone, email or the contact form on my website. I am happy to discuss briefly the main therapies I offer and answer any questions you have about the process.

We can then arrange an initial consultation to discuss in detail your main difficulties and a treatment plan for how to resolve them.

If you are considering psychotherapy but do not know where to start, a free initial consultation is the perfect first step. It will allow you to explore your options, ask questions, and feel more confident about taking the first step towards your well-being.

It is a 30-minute, completely free meeting with a Mental Health specialist that does not obligate you to anything.

What are the benefits of a free consultation?

Who is a free consultation suitable for?

Important:

Potential benefits of a free initial consultation

During this first session: potential clients have the chance to learn more about you and your approach before agreeing to work together.

Offering a free consultation will help you build trust with the client. It shows them that you want to give them a chance to make sure you are the right person to help them before they move forward. Additionally, you should also be confident that you can support your clients and that the client has problems that you can help them cope with. Also, you can avoid any ethical difficult situations about charging a client for a session in which you choose not to proceed based on fit.

We've found that people are more likely to proceed with therapy after a free consultation, as it lowers the barrier to starting the process. Many people starting therapy are apprehensive about the unknown, even if they've had sessions before. Our culture associates a "risk-free" mindset with free offers, helping people feel more comfortable during the initial conversation with a specialist.

Another key advantage for Specialist

Specialists offering free initial consultations will be featured prominently in our upcoming advertising campaign, giving you greater visibility.

It's important to note that the initial consultation differs from a typical therapy session:
