Couples therapy: What if we choose to grow closer?

Couples Therapy: What if we choose to grow closer?

Lately, more and more couples have been coming to therapy with a desire to understand each other better, resolve recurring conflicts, rebuild emotional intimacy, and improve their sexual relationships.

And I find this a very encouraging tendency.
Why? Because seeking couples therapy doesn’t necessarily mean that a relationship is falling apart. Sometimes, it means that two people value their connection enough to invest in it.

What makes couples therapy helpful?

Learning to truly hear each other

In everyday life, partners often get caught in familiar patterns of communication. One person feels unheard, while the other feels constantly criticised or misunderstood. During therapy, couples sometimes discover that they have been interpreting each other’s words and actions very differently. A therapeutic space allows both partners to slow down, express their feelings and needs, and begin to see each other from a new perspective.

Understanding recurring conflicts

Many couples find themselves having the same arguments over and over again. Often, the real issue is not what they are arguing about, but the emotional needs, fears, expectations, and vulnerabilities hidden beneath the conflict. Therapy helps couples recognise these patterns and explore new ways of communicating without blaming or attacking each other.

Rebuilding emotional and physical intimacy

Intimacy is not only about sex. It is also about feeling safe, accepted, understood, and emotionally connected. Stress, unresolved conflicts, life transitions, and accumulated resentment can gradually create distance between partners. As a psychotherapist and sexologist, I work with both the emotional and sexual aspects of relationships, helping couples explore difficulties with desire, intimacy, communication, and sexual satisfaction.

Navigating crises and changes together

Every relationship goes through challenging periods: parenthood, relocation, emotional exhaustion, changes in sexual desire, personal crises, or simply the feeling that you’ve grown apart. Couples therapy can help partners understand what is happening between them and decide how they want to move forward.

Creating a space where both partners matter

My role as a therapist is not to decide who is right or wrong, or to take someone’s side. Instead, I help create a safe and respectful environment where both partners can express themselves, explore their experiences, and take responsibility for their part in the relationship.

One important thing I often remind couples:

The goal of therapy is not to create a relationship without disagreements. Conflict is a natural part of human relationships. The goal is to learn how to stay connected even when you disagree, to understand each other’s differences, and to find ways of being together that respect both partners’ needs and boundaries.

And sometimes, therapy also helps people honestly explore whether and how they want to continue their relationship.

Seeking help is not a sign of failure. It can be a sign of emotional maturity, care, and willingness to grow together.

✨ If you’ve been thinking about couples therapy for a while, perhaps now is the right time to give it a try.

I offer couples therapy and sexological counselling in English, Ukrainian, and Russian, online worldwide and in person in Budapest.

If you are considering psychotherapy but do not know where to start, a free initial consultation is the perfect first step. It will allow you to explore your options, ask questions, and feel more confident about taking the first step towards your well-being.

It is a 30-minute, completely free meeting with a Mental Health specialist that does not obligate you to anything.

Important:

Potential benefits of a free initial consultation

During this first session: potential clients have the chance to learn more about you and your approach before agreeing to work together.

Offering a free consultation will help you build trust with the client. It shows them that you want to give them a chance to make sure you are the right person to help them before they move forward. Additionally, you should also be confident that you can support your clients and that the client has problems that you can help them cope with. Also, you can avoid any ethical difficult situations about charging a client for a session in which you choose not to proceed based on fit.

We've found that people are more likely to proceed with therapy after a free consultation, as it lowers the barrier to starting the process. Many people starting therapy are apprehensive about the unknown, even if they've had sessions before. Our culture associates a "risk-free" mindset with free offers, helping people feel more comfortable during the initial conversation with a specialist.

Another key advantage for Specialist

Specialists offering free initial consultations will be featured prominently in our upcoming advertising campaign, giving you greater visibility.

It's important to note that the initial consultation differs from a typical therapy session:
