Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Life Coach, Psychotherapist and Social Worker

Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Life Coach, Psychotherapist and Social Worker
Z. Hamilton Avery, LCSW, BC-TMH, CMT, CYT-1,000, TIYT (he/they) is a therapist and social worker whose interdisciplinary background spans psychology, social work, healthcare, mental health, crisis intervention, integrative health, mindfulness, meditation, yoga, and body-based approaches. He provides online psychotherapy to adolescents (13+) and adults in Oklahoma, Florida, and South Carolina.
Z approaches mental health from a whole-person perspective. Thoughts and emotions matter, but so can physical health, nervous system responses, behavior, relationships, identity, environment, resources, values, and lived experience. Understanding these connections can help clients make sense of what they are experiencing without reducing them to a diagnosis or set of symptoms.
Z's approach is humanistic, person-centered, strengths-based, trauma-informed, evidence-based, and integrative. Treatment is collaboratively individualized rather than determined by a single theoretical model. Depending on the client and their goals, therapy may involve developing practical coping skills, strengthening emotional regulation, processing difficult experiences, practicing mindfulness or self-compassion, exploring patterns, clarifying values, or incorporating mind-body approaches.
His professional experience includes outpatient psychotherapy, community mental health, primary care, hospice, schools, nonprofit services, mobile crisis intervention, and emergency response. These experiences have strengthened his ability to work with complex concerns while remaining practical, flexible, and attentive to the individual in front of him.
Z believes therapy works best as an active collaboration. Clients bring knowledge of their own lives, experiences, values, and strengths. He brings clinical knowledge, curiosity, perspective, and evidence-based tools. Together, they identify what matters, pay attention to what is helping, and adjust when something does not fit. His goal is for clients to leave therapy with greater understanding of themselves and skills they can continue using in their own lives.
