From Seeking Approval to Embracing Self-Worth: My Journey
Growing up, my cousins were significant influences in my life. They constantly emphasised the importance of caring about how others perceive me. I was taught to be mindful of my actions and always act in ways that would earn respect from those around me. This focus on seeking approval and avoiding judgment became central to my mindset.
As a child, this emphasis on external validation seemed like sound advice, but it took a toll on my self-esteem. I was constantly worried about how I was perceived and often felt anxious in social situations. This preoccupation with others’ opinions made it challenging for me to be authentic. I found myself adjusting my behaviour to fit in rather than expressing my true self.
This pattern of seeking approval was deeply rooted in the conditioning I experienced, where repeated emphasis on external validation shaped my self-perception and behaviour.
With time and reflection, I began to understand that my worth isn’t defined by others’ opinions. True self-worth comes from within and is rooted in self-acceptance. I gradually shifted my focus from seeking external validation to valuing my beliefs and qualities. Although this transition was gradual, it led to a more genuine and fulfilling sense of self.
While I’ve made significant progress, I still occasionally struggle with overthinking and the desire for approval. Despite this, embracing my true self has brought increased confidence and authenticity to my life.
The journey from seeking approval to embracing self-worth has profoundly transformed my perspective. It taught me that my value is defined by me, not by others.
Understanding this can empower you to live more confidently and authentically.
