How I Learned to Balance My Life After Being Overcommitted
Being committed is fantastic and admirable. Being overcommitted? Not so much.
People often find that when they reach that goal, they want more and/or the victory feels hollow.
Underneath all that ambition and striving has its roots not where you'd expect. It's more about the search for a feeling of accomplishment, that is the real driving force.
A dangerous side-effect of being overly committed can sometimes result in burn-out.(Ewing, 2020)
That mindset was me before my first MS attack, with the resulting two numb legs. I was in hospital for a week on an intravenous steroid drip.
That was the beginning of my MS journey, 25 years ago.
Rewind back to 1998. I was working full-time, in the gym for two hours every night and gigging at weekends with different bands. Burning the candle at both ends.
They say the clever man learns from his own mistakes, but the wise man learns from other people's mistakes.
Accidents happen but if there was something you could have done to change the outcome, it's a lesson.
