Understanding Depression: Breaking the Silence and Finding Hope
«I’m just tired.»
Is it really just tiredness?
In my sessions, one sentence comes up again and again: «I’m just tired.»
Sometimes it is simple tiredness. But sometimes it is depression speaking quietly.
Depression doesn’t always look like crying or sadness. Often it looks like:
- Replying to a message feels like climbing a hill
- Favourite things no longer feel enjoyable
- Sleeping too much, or lying awake at 3 a.m.
- Smiling at work, then feeling empty at home
- Thinking, «Everyone else manages, so why can’t I?»
Many people also hide it. They worry about «log kya kahenge» or feel they have no «reason» to be low. But depression doesn’t need a reason, and it is not a lack of willpower.
If this sounds familiar, start small:
- Pick one anchor for your day, like a fixed wake-up time or a 10-minute walk
- Tell one person the truth when they ask «How are you?»
- Notice how long the feeling has lasted. If it continues for two weeks or more, or affects your work, studies or relationships, it’s time to talk to a professional.
If someone you love is struggling:
Skip «Be positive» or «Think of others who have it worse.»
Try instead:
«I’m here. You don’t have to explain anything.»
Sometimes presence helps more than advice.
Therapy works. Many people recover and feel like themselves again, and asking for help is a sign of strength.
If you’d like to talk, you can book a session with me here on Mentalzon. Your first step doesn’t have to be big, it just has to be taken.
