Limerence — "That wasn't love. It was limerence — and psychology says they're not the same thing"

"Limerence" is a term coined by psychologist Dorothy Tennov in her 1979 book Love and Limerence. She used it to describe a specific, intense state of infatuation that's distinct from mature love, even though the two get confused all the time.

What limerence actually is

Tennov described it as an involuntary, obsessive cognitive state centered on another person — what she called the "limerent object." Key features:

  • Intrusive thinking — the person occupies your mind almost constantly, whether you want them to or not
  • Acute longing for reciprocation — you don't just want to be near them, you desperately want them to feel the same intensity back
  • Emotional dependency on their behavior — a text back feels euphoric, silence feels devastating. Your mood swings on their reactions
  • Intensification through uncertainty — ironically, ambiguity ("does she like me back?") often makes it stronger, not weaker
  • Idealization — you tend to magnify their good qualities and explain away or ignore red flags
  • Physical symptoms — racing heart, anxiety, that "can't eat, can't focus" feeling

How it differs from love

The psychological distinction usually comes down to a few things:

  • Focus: Limerence is focused on your own emotional state and need for reciprocation, whereas mature love is focused on the other person's wellbeing.
  • Conditions: Limerence thrives on uncertainty and obstacles, whereas mature love grows through stability and security.
  • Reality: Limerence is based partly on fantasy/idealization, whereas mature love is based on realistic knowledge of the person, flaws included.
  • Agency: Limerence is involuntary and hard to control, whereas mature love involves choice and commitment.
  • Duration: Limerence tends to fade or crash (often within months to ~2 years), whereas mature love can deepen over time.

Why the quote makes that distinction

The line "that wasn't love, it was limerence" is usually making the point that intensity isn't the same as depth. Limerence can feel like the most powerful thing you've ever experienced — but it's largely a projection: you're in love with an idealized version of someone, plus the rush of wanting them to want you back, rather than a grounded connection to who they actually are.

That doesn't mean limerence is fake or bad — it's a real, well-documented psychological experience, and it can be the opening chapter of real love. The point of the distinction is just that it can burn out or collapse the moment reality intrudes, in a way that mature attachment doesn't.

It is a 30-minute, completely free meeting with a Mental Health specialist that does not obligate you to anything.

What are the benefits of a free consultation?

Who is a free consultation suitable for?

Important:

Potential benefits of a free initial consultation

During this first session: potential clients have the chance to learn more about you and your approach before agreeing to work together.

Offering a free consultation will help you build trust with the client. It shows them that you want to give them a chance to make sure you are the right person to help them before they move forward. Additionally, you should also be confident that you can support your clients and that the client has problems that you can help them cope with. Also, you can avoid any ethical difficult situations about charging a client for a session in which you choose not to proceed based on fit.

We've found that people are more likely to proceed with therapy after a free consultation, as it lowers the barrier to starting the process. Many people starting therapy are apprehensive about the unknown, even if they've had sessions before. Our culture associates a "risk-free" mindset with free offers, helping people feel more comfortable during the initial conversation with a specialist.

Another key advantage for Specialist

Specialists offering free initial consultations will be featured prominently in our upcoming advertising campaign, giving you greater visibility.

It's important to note that the initial consultation differs from a typical therapy session:
