Your Nervous System Doesn't Read Wikipedia: The 2026 Polyvagal Theory Controversy, Explained
If you've ever told a friend you were "in fight-or-flight," described a shutdown as going into "freeze," or heard a therapist mention your "window of tolerance" — you've been speaking Polyvagal Theory. In February 2026, 39 scientists published a paper arguing the theory's biology doesn't hold up. Here's the drama, and why your grounding exercises are still safe.
The vocabulary you didn't know you'd absorbed:
Somewhere between a therapy TikTok slideshow and a friend's Instagram story, most of us picked up a whole vocabulary for our nervous systems: dysregulated, vagal tone, window of tolerance, fawn response. Nobody handed us a neuroscience textbook — we just absorbed it, the way you absorb a new slang word without knowing its etymology.
That vocabulary comes from Polyvagal Theory, developed by neuroscientist Stephen Porges in the 1990s. It's arguably the single most influential idea in modern trauma therapy — and as of early 2026, it's also in the middle of a very public, very academic fistfight.
The 60-second refresher
Polyvagal Theory proposes that your autonomic nervous system moves through three broad states, like rungs on a ladder (a visual popularized by therapist Deb Dana, who adapted Porges' theory for clinical use):
- Ventral vagal — safe, calm, socially connected. You can make eye contact, your voice has natural rhythm, you can think clearly.
- Sympathetic — fight or flight. Mobilized, activated, on alert.
- Dorsal vagal — freeze or shutdown. Numb, foggy, collapsed, disconnected.
A fourth state, "fawn" — people-pleasing your way out of danger — was added later by writer Pete Walker, not Porges, but the two get taught together so often that most people assume they're one package.
This framework became the backbone of somatic and trauma-informed therapy — you'll find it running quietly underneath the work of Bessel van der Kolk, Peter Levine, Pat Ogden, and a good chunk of the trauma-treatment world.
Then, in February 2026, the plot twist
A researcher named Paul Grossman — who has been questioning polyvagal theory's biology since 2007 — gathered 38 co-authors (physiologists and neuroanatomists from institutions across multiple countries) and published a paper in the journal Clinical Neuropsychiatry with a title that does not mince words: "Why the Polyvagal Theory Is Untenable."
Their argument, stripped of jargon, comes down to three things:
- The evolutionary story the theory relies on — that our "safe and social" vagal pathway is a newer, uniquely mammalian upgrade — isn't well supported by comparative biology.
- The clean split between the "freeze" pathway and the "safe and social" pathway isn't as anatomically distinct as the theory needs it to be.
- The heart-rate measurement used as a stand-in for "vagal tone" mostly reflects your breathing rate in the moment, not some stable trait of your nervous system.
The story spread fast — well past academic circles and into therapist Facebook groups, psychology podcasts, and yes, therapy TikTok. Wikipedia updated its entry within weeks.
The part that's genuinely funny: Porges did not take this lying down. He published a rebuttal in the same issue of the journal, arguing the critics were attacking claims the theory never actually made — and pointedly noted that versions of this exact critique have been showing up, and getting the exact same response, since 2007. A separate group of researchers then published their own scholarly response arguing the original critique doesn't meet the bar required for a scientific theory to be declared "untenable."
So: a nearly two-decade-old scientific grudge match resurfaced, went viral in wellness spaces that had no idea it was simmering, and is currently being fought out in a psychiatry journal in real time — while millions of people are out here using "my nervous system is dysregulated" as a normal sentence. If you've ever cited "the theory" to a client like it was settled fact, you're in excellent company. So was everyone else.
There's also a quieter, more useful critique that's come out of this: some clinicians have noted that Deb Dana's "ladder" metaphor — with calm-and-connected at the top — accidentally taught clients to rank their own states, leading some to feel like they were "failing" when they couldn't climb back to the top rung. That's not a biology problem. That's a design problem worth sitting with regardless of how the academic dispute resolves.
So... are grounding exercises now pointless?
No — and this is the detail that gets lost in the headlines. The critique is aimed at the underlying mechanism: exactly how the vagus nerve is wired and how it evolved. Nobody in this fight — not even Grossman — is arguing that helping someone notice their body's state, track their capacity for stress, or practice feeling safer with another person is useless. That clinical value is backed by a much wider base of research in stress physiology, attachment, and emotion regulation than any single theory.
Think of it like your grandmother's chicken soup. She may have had the biology slightly wrong about why it helps a cold — but the soup, the warmth, and the being-cared-for were never really about the biochemistry.
What this actually means for you
- Keep the language, hold it loosely. "I'm in fight-or-flight" is still a useful sentence for describing what's happening in your body — treat it as a helpful map, not a lab result.
- You are not failing at your nervous system. If you've ever felt like you should be "further up the ladder" than you are, that says more about a flawed metaphor than about you.
- Ask your therapist the fun question. "Is this the metaphor or the mechanism?" is a great thing to ask any clinician who references vagal tone — most of us will enjoy the question far more than you'd expect.
- The skill was never really about the wiring diagram. Noticing your state, naming it, and having a person or practice that helps you shift it — that's the actual work, and it doesn't depend on this debate's outcome.
A note for fellow clinicians
Nothing here demands panic or a rewrite of your entire trauma framework. What it does deserve is a small shift in how confidently we present the mechanism versus the model. Swapping "your dorsal vagal system is shutting down" for "here's a framework a lot of people find useful for understanding shutdown states" costs you nothing clinically and buys you a lot of intellectual honesty — plus it holds up a lot better the next time a client's cousin sends them a link to a "polyvagal theory debunked" headline.
Science arguing with itself in public, loudly, is not a scandal. It's the field working exactly as designed.
