RETURNING TO THE ROOT: THE PSYCHOLOGY OF COMING BACK TO YOURSELF

There is an ancient Taoist idea that has always felt deeply meaningful to me: Returning to the root.

We spend so much of our lives moving outward.

Toward goals.
Toward expectations.
Toward other people’s opinions.
Toward responsibilities.
Toward the person we believe we should become.

We learn to adapt.

We learn to perform different roles.

We become professionals, parents, partners, friends, caregivers.

And somewhere among all these identities, expectations, and constant movement, a quiet question can appear:

Where am I in all of this?

Taoist philosophy offers an interesting direction.

Not another destination.
A return.
Not a return to the past.
Not an attempt to become who we once were.
But a movement back toward something more fundamental — toward the inner ground beneath all the roles we have learned to play.

In the Tao Te Ching, returning to the root is associated with stillness.

From a psychological perspective, this image can become a powerful metaphor for reconnecting with ourselves.

THE LIFE WE BUILD AROUND OURSELVES

Human beings naturally develop identities.

We learn who we are partly through relationships, culture, experience, work, success, failure, praise, criticism, and the expectations surrounding us.

There is nothing inherently wrong with this.

We need identities.

They help us navigate the world.

But difficulties can arise when we become so identified with our roles that we lose contact with the person underneath them.

We may begin to experience ourselves primarily through questions such as:

  • Am I successful enough?
  • Am I doing enough?
  • What do they think of me?
  • What should I become next?
  • Why am I not where I thought I would be?

Gradually, life can become organized around constant evaluation.

We stop simply experiencing ourselves.
We begin continuously measuring ourselves.
And that can be exhausting.

WHEN THE MIND LIVES OUTSIDE ITSELF

Psychologically, our attention is often directed outward.

  • We monitor reactions.
  • We anticipate problems.
  • We compare ourselves with others.
  • We imagine future scenarios.
  • We replay conversations.
  • We evaluate our performance.

The mind becomes extremely busy maintaining a model of how life should unfold.

And sometimes this creates a strange experience:

We are present everywhere except within ourselves.

The body may be sitting quietly in one room while the mind is living in tomorrow, yesterday, someone else's opinion, or an imagined future.

Returning to the root can begin with something remarkably simple:
returning to what is actually here.

The body.
The breath.
The sensations.
The present moment.

Not because the outside world does not matter.
But because this is where our direct experience of life begins.

BEFORE THE ROLES

Imagine removing your roles one by one.

  • For a moment, you are not your profession.
  • You are not your achievements.
  • You are not your failures.
  • You are not someone else's expectation.
  • You are not your social image.
  • You are not even the story you usually tell yourself about who you are.

What remains?

This question does not necessarily require an intellectual answer.

In fact, trying to answer it too quickly may simply create another story.
Perhaps it is something to experience.

There is a level of awareness that exists before we begin describing ourselves.

Before:

I am successful.
I am unsuccessful.
I am strong.
I am weak.
I am this kind of person.

There is simply experience.
Breathing.
Sensation.
Awareness.
Presence.

This is where psychology and Taoist philosophy can meet in an interesting way.

We do not need to destroy our identity.
We simply remember that we are more than the identities we carry.

THE TREE DOES NOT FORGET ITS ROOTS

A tree can grow very far from its beginning.
Its branches can reach toward the sky.
Its leaves can move in thousands of directions.
It can change through seasons.
It can survive storms.

But none of this is possible without the invisible system beneath the ground.

The roots remain.

Human life also moves outward.
We build relationships.
Careers.
Families.
Dreams.
Responsibilities.
Ideas about ourselves.

There is nothing wrong with growing branches.

The problem begins when we live entirely in the branches and forget the roots.

Then every wind feels dangerous.
Every external change threatens our sense of stability.
Every judgment can feel like a judgment of our entire being.

Returning to the root means rediscovering an inner reference point that does not depend entirely on what is happening around us.

THE BODY AS A WAY HOME

One of the simplest ways to return is through the body.

The mind can travel anywhere.
The body cannot.
The body is always here.

This is one reason body awareness can be psychologically grounding.

  • Notice your feet touching the floor.
  • Notice the movement of your breathing.
  • Notice your hands.
  • Notice the weight of your body.
  • Notice where tension is present without immediately trying to change it.

For a few moments, you do not need to analyze yourself.
You simply experience yourself.

In Qigong practice, attention repeatedly returns to the body, breath, awareness, and inner sensation.

For me, this has always carried a deeper meaning.
It is not only about relaxation.

It is a movement from the external toward the internal.
From thinking about life toward experiencing life.
From constant mental activity toward presence.

A return.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BECOME YOURSELF

Modern culture often speaks about “becoming the best version of yourself.”

There can be something motivating in that idea.
But it can also quietly create another endless project:

I am not enough yet.
I need to improve.
I need to achieve more.
Heal more.
Understand more.
Become more spiritual.
Become calmer.
Become stronger.
Become someone else before I can finally feel whole.

Returning to the root offers another possibility.

What if not everything needs to be created?
What if some things need to be uncovered?

Perhaps beneath layers of fear, adaptation, expectation, and self-judgment there is not an empty space waiting to be filled.

Perhaps there is already something there.

Presence.
Awareness.
Life.

You do not always have to construct yourself.
Sometimes you can simply meet yourself.

STILLNESS DOES NOT MEAN NOTHING IS HAPPENING

Stillness can feel uncomfortable because we are accustomed to constant stimulation.

When external activity decreases, we may suddenly notice everything that was hidden underneath it.

Restlessness.
Thoughts.
Emotions.
Unanswered questions.

This is why returning inward is not always immediately peaceful.
Sometimes the first thing we encounter is noise.
But this does not mean the practice is failing.

Imagine entering a room in which music has been playing loudly all day.
When the music stops, you suddenly notice the hum of the refrigerator, the sound of traffic, your own breathing.
Those sounds were already there.
Silence simply made them noticeable.

Inner stillness can work similarly.
It reveals.

And what is revealed can gradually be observed without needing to become another problem to solve.

A SIMPLE RETURN-TO-THE-ROOT PRACTICE

Sit comfortably.
You do not need to create any special state.

For a moment, notice everything that is pulling your attention outward.

Tasks.
People.
Messages.
Plans.
Responsibilities.
Expectations.

You do not need to reject any of them.
Simply acknowledge them.

Then gently bring attention back to your body.
Feel where your body touches the chair or the ground.
Notice your breathing.
Do not control it.
Feel the simple fact that you are here.

Then ask yourself quietly:

Who am I when I am not trying to become anything?

Do not search for an answer.
Let the question remain open.

Stay with the body.
Stay with the breath.
Stay with awareness itself.

For one minute, allow yourself to exist without improving, performing, explaining, or proving anything.
Simply be here.

RETURNING DOES NOT MEAN WITHDRAWING FROM LIFE

Returning to the root is not about abandoning the world.

A tree does not choose between roots and branches.
It needs both.

We can participate fully in life.
We can create.
Work.
Love.
Build.
Learn.
Take responsibility.
Change.
Grow.

But perhaps we can do all of this without losing contact with the quiet place from which our life grows.

The movement is not:
world or self.

It is:
outward and inward.
Expansion and return.
Action and stillness.
Branches and roots.

COMING BACK TO YOURSELF

There will always be periods when life pulls us outward.
That is natural.

Sometimes responsibilities require almost all of our attention.
Sometimes change arrives quickly.
Sometimes we become lost in thought, ambition, fear, relationships, work, or expectations.

The goal is not to remain permanently centered.
Perhaps that would simply become another impossible demand.

The important thing is remembering that we can return.
Again.
And again.
And again.

In Taoist philosophy, returning is not failure.
It is part of the movement of life itself.

And psychologically, perhaps this is one of the gentlest things we can learn:

We do not always need to search farther away for ourselves.

Sometimes the direction is the opposite.

  • Back to the body.
  • Back to the breath.
  • Back to awareness.
  • Back beneath the roles and expectations.
  • Back to the place inside us that existed before we began trying so hard to become someone.

Back to the root.
