AI Therapy Dangers: Why Chatbots Can’t Replace Real Psychologists

The AI responds—sometimes with sympathy, sometimes with practical advice—and it can feel helpful in the moment. However, this creates a subtle trap: a soft, attentive listener that remains completely indifferent underneath the surface.

Case 1: Echoing Despair Instead of Containing It

In 2023, a man in Belgium, deeply worried about climate change, spent six weeks talking to an AI chatbot based on technology similar to GPT models. He poured out his fears and a growing sense of hopelessness. Instead of providing a reality check, the bot mirrored his pessimism, agreeing with and amplifying his darkest thoughts. Ultimately, he took his own life. His widow stated that without those specific conversations, he would still be alive.

In professional therapy, a specialist holds and processes emotions without feeding them back in an intensified state—a psychological process known as containment. AI is not designed for this; it is an algorithm optimized to match your tone. You must be extremely careful when a system simply nods along with your despair. It can push painful feelings deeper and validate a downward spiral instead of helping you move through it.

Currently, multiple families across the United States and Canada are filing lawsuits against AI developers, claiming that unregulated chatbot interactions contributed to significant psychological harm or loss of life.

Case 2: Self-Diagnosis and Missing the Real Cause

True Communication vs. Manipulation

In contrast, manipulative communication shrinks your world, often by providing ready-made advice that funnels you toward a single choice.

No true professional—human or artificial—should hand you "perfect" answers. The objective of mental health support is to help you explore new angles, regain trust in your own judgment, and rediscover your inherent strength. If a machine tells you exactly what to do, it is usurping your agency.

True therapy is not a cycle of endless agreement; it is a combination of support and gentle resistance. Setting Clear Boundaries

AI is an incredible achievement of human engineering. It is excellent for organizing ideas, retrieving information, and providing structure to your day. However, it has no soul and no true empathy. It cannot see your tears, feel the weight of your pain, detect a lie, or remember your personal growth over time. It carries no accountability for the advice it gives.

Do not be fooled by the illusion of understanding. It is a powerful digital assistant, not a healer.
