Soft Potatoes & Hard Eggs:

Understanding Your Trauma Survival Mode

Trauma is a deeply distressing experience that completely overwhelms your ability to cope, often leaving your mind and body trapped in a perpetual state of high alert. When your nervous system is stuck in this survival mode, processing daily life becomes exhausting.

To cope with this overwhelming pressure, individuals frequently fall into one of two default survival patterns:

  1. The "Soft Potato" State (Collapse) When the weight of trauma becomes too much, some people collapse into a state of helplessness, numbness, and total exhaustion. Like a soft potato, they lose their structure, feel completely drained of energy, and struggle to find the motivation to complete basic daily tasks.
  2. The "Hard Egg" State (Rigidity) Conversely, others adapt by hardening their exterior. To protect themselves from further hurt, they become emotionally distant, rigid, and deeply cynical. Like a hard egg, this tough shell keeps people out, but it also traps the individual in a state of isolation and hyper-vigilance.

Breaking the Cycle with CBT

Instead of allowing your past or your current environment to control your life, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) offers practical, structured tools to break out of these reactive states. CBT helps you:

  • Identify and challenge negative thinking traps and anxiety loops.
  • Establish healthy, clear personal boundaries.
  • Safely rebuild a genuine sense of personal security and control.

Healing means recognizing whether you are collapsing or hardening, and gently guiding your nervous system back to a balanced, safe reality.
