The Coffee Bean Effect: Finding Stability Through Difficult Days

Blog | Burnout

Hello and welcome!

My name is Salma Ashraf, and I am a clinical psychologist. Many people think managing mental health during a crisis is complicated, but it can actually be very simple. Before diving into complex tools, let me share a simple story about life.

The Story of the Boiling Water

Imagine a pot of boiling water on a stove. This hot water represents the hardships, stress, or burnout of everyday life. Now, look at how three different things react when put into that exact same boiling water:

  • The Potato: It goes in hard and strong. But the boiling water makes it soft, weak, and helpless.
  • The Egg: It goes in fragile with a liquid heart. But the boiling water makes it hard, tough, and bitter.
  • The Coffee Bean: It is completely different. When put into the boiling water, it does not let the water ruin it. Instead, it changes the water into something rich, beautiful, and aromatic.

The Power of Perception

The boiling water was exactly the same for all three. They reacted differently because of their internal makeup and how they interacted with the heat.

In life, a difficult situation happens to many people. Some become weak like the potato. Some become bitter and cold like the egg. But psychological tools teach you how to become like the coffee bean.

Your thoughts control your feelings and your actions. If you can change how you think about your challenges, you can actively change your environment instead of letting it change you. Turn your crisis into growth and become the coffee bean.
